Hydrogen is purpose-built for Shopify's Storefront API and deploys natively on Oxygen. Next.js Commerce is framework-agnostic and needs separate hosting. If Shopify is your only backend and tight integration with Shopify Functions, Markets, and checkout extensibility matters, Hydrogen's the stronger call.
Oxygen is Shopify's edge hosting platform built specifically for Hydrogen. It handles deployment, CDN caching, and scaling automatically. You can technically deploy Hydrogen on Vercel or Cloudflare, but Oxygen gives you zero-config Shopify infrastructure integration and comes included with Shopify Plus.
Some apps work cleanly via API. Others inject JavaScript into Liquid templates and simply won't function inside a Hydrogen storefront. We audit your app stack during discovery and flag which integrations need API-first replacements or custom-built equivalents.
Hydrogen works with any Shopify plan that has Storefront API access.
