Migration Service

Your BigCommerce Theme is Costing You Conversions. We Build You the Headless Store.

  • Stencil locks your design into predefined theme zones with limited layout control
  • Theme rendering forces full-page server requests that delay Time to Interactive by 2–4 seconds
  • Customisation requires Handlebars templating and BigCommerce's theme engine constraints
  • Stencil developer talent is scarce and expensive to hire or retain long-term
  • Advanced personalisation breaks when theme logic conflicts with third-party scripts
  • Theme updates trigger full regression testing across 15+ page templates every release
  • Build pixel-perfect storefronts with React components that render exactly as your design team specifies
  • Ship product pages with Lighthouse Performance scores of 90–100 and pass Core Web Vitals thresholds
  • Serve 80% of catalog pages as static HTML from CDN nodes in 140+ global locations
  • Tap BigCommerce's GraphQL Storefront API -- the fastest headless commerce API for catalog queries
  • Pay zero transaction fees on any BigCommerce plan while using any payment gateway you choose
  • Deploy edge middleware for real-time A/B tests, geo-personalisation, and dynamic pricing without backend latency

BigCommerce merchants going headless

BigCommerce is a solid commerce backend. But the Stencil theme framework constrains your storefront design and limits performance. BigCommerce''s own push toward headless acknowledges this -- their Catalyst framework and GraphQL Storefront API are built for decoupled frontends. Going headless unlocks design freedom and performance that Stencil cannot deliver.

The headless BigCommerce architecture

BigCommerce continues managing products, inventory, orders, payments, and shipping. A Next.js frontend fetches product data via BigCommerce''s GraphQL Storefront API, statically generates product and category pages (CDN-served, Lighthouse 90+), and handles cart and checkout via API. Your team manages commerce in the BigCommerce admin -- the storefront is a separate, performance-optimised application.

Why BigCommerce is a good headless backend

BigCommerce has one of the best commerce APIs in the industry. The GraphQL Storefront API is well-documented, performant, and feature-complete. Unlike Shopify, BigCommerce charges zero transaction fees on any plan. For merchants who want headless commerce without platform fees eating into margins, BigCommerce is an excellent backend choice.

FAQ

Common questions

What is headless BigCommerce?

Honestly, the concept is pretty straightforward once you see it laid out. Headless BigCommerce means you're keeping BigCommerce as your commerce engine -- products, orders, inventory, payments, all still living there -- but you're swapping out the Stencil theme for a custom Next.js storefront that pulls data through BigCommerce's GraphQL Storefront API. Your admin panel looks identical. Your team still processes orders the same way. Nothing changes in the back office. What changes is everything your customers actually see and interact with, because that's now a purpose-built React application you fully control.

Why go headless instead of just improving my Stencil theme?

Look, Stencil's a decent theme system -- but it has a performance ceiling, and you can't optimize your way through it. I've tried. Most experienced BigCommerce developers have tried. Headless Next.js storefronts consistently outperform Stencil on Lighthouse scores and give you complete design freedom that no theme customization can match. BigCommerce themselves recommend going headless for performance-focused merchants, so this isn't some fringe opinion from the dev community. It's the direction the platform is actively pushing toward.

Does BigCommerce charge extra for headless?

No -- and this surprises a lot of merchants coming from Shopify. The GraphQL Storefront API is available on all BigCommerce plans, not locked behind an enterprise tier. But the bigger deal is transaction fees. BigCommerce charges zero, regardless of which payment provider you're running. Stripe, Braintree, a regional processor in Austin or Auckland -- doesn't matter. That difference adds up fast at any meaningful revenue volume, and it's a big part of why BigCommerce makes such a cost-effective headless backend compared to the alternatives.

What happens to my BigCommerce apps?

Most apps keep working fine. If an app integrates through the BigCommerce API -- reviews, loyalty programs, inventory sync -- it'll continue functioning without any changes on your end. But apps that work by injecting scripts directly into the Stencil storefront are a different story. Those need alternatives. In practice, we either rebuild that functionality natively in Next.js or swap it out for an API-based service that plays nicely with a headless setup. It's rarely a dealbreaker, but it's worth auditing your app stack early so there are no surprises mid-project.

How is checkout handled?

You've got two solid paths here. The simplest option is BigCommerce's embedded checkout -- it drops into your headless storefront and preserves every payment method and checkout customization you've already configured. So if you've got Apple Pay, saved addresses, and a custom shipping estimator working today, they keep working. Or, if you need complete control over the checkout experience -- custom upsell steps, a branded multi-page flow, something Shopify simply won't let you build -- we can go fully custom using the Checkout API. Most merchants start with embedded checkout and move to custom later once the storefront is stable.

How long does a BigCommerce headless migration take?

A standard catalog migration typically runs 4-6 weeks. Complex product configurations, tiered pricing rules, or a custom checkout flow push that to 6-10 weeks -- and that's not padding, that's just what thorough staging and QA actually takes. Either way, I scope the full migration before a single line of code gets written, so you're not getting a surprise timeline halfway through.
